To your point of the Middle East being more complicated now than in the last 60 or so years is eminently a well made assertion; I could not agree more. Where I would divert my attention in the alliances and potential adversarial roles is based upon nearly two decades of observations where some who were ardent in their enmities towards Israel are more virulent in their hostilities and others are more coy and subtle in the treatment of the Jewish State, so much so that it would be negligent to dismiss that even within the Arab communities (as variant as the attitudes are), the complications are as much as a situation of changing allegiances coming from the disparate versions of Islamic attitudes, between Shi'a and Sunni; even within the adherents of the Sunni, there are the subset 'tribal' distinctions that are agitated from outside towards 'Palestinian' affinities in not being able to truly define which Arab sensitivities (UAE, others) are more likely to seek some peace with Israel in view of the threat from the Iranian Islamic Regime and its alliances.
From external sources, we read: [Iran and Russia are strategic allies and form an axis in the Caucasus alongside Armenia. Iran and Russia are also military allies in the conflicts in Syria and Iraq and partners in Afghanistan and post-Soviet Central Asia]. This is still true.
To your title point, while the urge is to concur, the reality that presents itself in view of the history of the Soviet failure in the 1970's to adequately supply and support Arab anti-Semitic antipathies against Israel, and the more modern venture of Russian CIS forces in Syria being conceded by the predecessor American 44th Administration's inability to define the red line in the sand in the face of al-Assad, an untested Israel government is in no position to trust anyone for defense and protection of its sovereignty, something that is in the preliminary stages of being challenged as this is being written.
The key here is that the American 45th Administration dealt itself out of the relationship the 44th Administration sponsored for the proper reasons the American 46th Administration are now ignoring. What has changed? The leadership of the Iranian Islamic Regime; they are in a different place than before and no one has gauged that correctly in the circumstances now seen; except Israel.
