A Few Points to Note, Dr. PipesReader comment on item: Victory – An Obsolete Concept? Submitted by Aymenn Jawad (United Kingdom), Jul 27, 2009 at 07:01 Dr. Pipes: 1. 'Except for ending slavery'- War only ended slavery in the United States, so am I correct to presume that this t-shirt you refer to as bearing this slogan is made in the US? 2. Is the excerpt from the interview with Obama his full answer to the question about defining a US victory in Afghanistan? If so, it is rather strange, for the last sentence 'and we are confident...' contains a protasis (i.e. the 'if' part of a conditional sentence) but no apodosis (i.e. no main clause). Either Obama is intending anacoluthon for rhetorical effect, or he seriously needs to brush up his grammar. I wonder why the media never pick up on Obama's grammatical faults, when they were so eager to prey on Bush for poor grammar? 3. You talk about the need for an 'Israeli victory over the Palestinians', but surely this has already been achieved? The Israelis have, thankfully, crushed the Palestinians in every military venture. What is needed now is to expose the Palestinian leadership's true intentions to the international community and thereby take away any remaining sympathy they might have. Please see my extensive writing on the topic of the Arab-Israeli conflict. No, Israel has not yet won, is not even close. << Previous Comment Next Comment >> Reader comments (47) on this item
