But Putin is the head of this serpent. I think you are overlooking his Government, namely the two houses of his legislature. Putin succeeded better than Stalin in creating a government that supports his policies. He appears to have done this even better than Turkey's Erdogan. The weakness (or strength) of his situation is that no "leader" exists who can replace him - that's why he only goes against individuals who could be leaders. And some of them aren't even poisoned, but "convicted" and jailed; and the fact that they are convicted shows that he has succeeded in dominating his judicial system as well.

However, I think you are correct. Defeating militarily Putin will not change his views - he never forgave Gorbachev
