england still existsReader comment on item: Western Civilization on Trial: Why We Should Be Watching Geert Wilders Submitted by rw (Australia), Feb 9, 2010 at 04:36 This comment was not written by an Englishman. There really is no such thing as a governing elite in the UK. Anybody can be elected to parliament, and perhaps one difficulty is that anyone, including quite unqualified people, frequently is. The UK chose to join the EEC as it then was; we jokingly used to say that the reason we joined it was to make sure it didn't work; but we opened the door to large numbers of immigrants with little interest in integrating, and this has had a great effect. It may well be true that many aspects of British life have changed a lot - it is not the country it was 'when I was a boy', but it is still England. We long since ceased to be the world leaders we were due to the Industrial Revolution; the economy has changed; social structure has changed...and while government policy since the last war is a factor it has not 'killed off' England....However, this writer now happily lives in Australia....
