Why Israel Has No Other ChoiceReader comment on item: Panetta Predicts an Israeli Strike on Iran Submitted by P. Schwartz (United States), Feb 7, 2012 at 22:53 To add to the last "thought," ie., the US presidential elections, perhaps it would be useful to remind readers that the main if not the only reason that Obama is concerned re an Israeli attack on Iran is that it would send oil prices skyrocketing and thus affect the US economy, as well as the world economy, in a very adverse way. This is his prime motivation. I dont believe he cares one way or another about the survival of Israel. Although the Israelis are minimizing the impact, it would be devastating for Israel in every way when Iran retaliates. We all know that life is unfair and we see it clearly in this scenario. Why should Israel have to take such extreme measures to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran when Iran threatens the whole world not just Israel. True, it is an existential threat to Israel unlike other countries but it still is a mortal threat to everyone. Putting nuclear weapons in the hands of madmen is never a good idea. That is how WWII began and ended with six million murdered at the hands of the madman's executioners. Both Netanyahu and Barak are painfully aware of the need to never let this monstrosity happen again. That is why Israel really does not have any choice but to bomb the weapons of mass destruction held by the Iranians who have made very clear that they intend to annihilate Israel and the Jewish people.
