As you say ---unintended consequences.

As one might put it in another way, Israel's politicians have been supremely good at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.... but they have met their match in the great telegenic symbol of total neutrality... He is truly better at this game than anyone, and therefore Israel is going to wake up in a couple of years with all the lands of the "near abroad" (as the Russians would put it) starving, in anarchy, and demilitarised by lack of infrastructure or maintenance.

The Palestinian state could then be "implemented" in Trans-Jordan, as initially intended by a tired British Government who wanted to get the troops back home---
