A short war for diversionReader comment on item: Egypt after Morsi: Joy and Worry Submitted by Michael Greengard (Israel), Jul 4, 2013 at 04:15 It seems to me that if Egypt's military rulers go looking for a short war for purposes of diversion, they are far more likely to choose Ethiopia, because they have a ready made reason (the Ethiopian dam on the Nile), and because they are a lot more likely to succeed. Not only is Ethiopia militarily inexperienced and weak, it is an ethnically and religiously divided country - they might not put up much of a fight. They have always been identified as a Christian country, too - another incentive (although possibly not as strong as with a Morsi-led government). My money is on a war against Ethiopia. Daniel Pipes replies: The last time an Egyptian government tried to fight a war about 600 miles away down the Red Sea (in Yemen in the 1960s), it turned out disastrously. I expect the same would happen this time, maybe worse. Reader comments (45) on this item
