3 more years of Morsi's rule would have changed Egypt to AfghanistanReader comment on item: Egypt after Morsi: Joy and Worry Submitted by Sherif Helmy (United Kingdom), Jul 7, 2013 at 16:19 Dr Pipes has a great insight of the Middle East and his analysis was sharp as ever, However, I beg to differ with his view about letting Morsi continue. The assumption that Islamists would allow free elections that would oust them is fanciful. Just look at Gaza, Sudan and Iran and you get the point. Once in power, the divine rulers are under no obligation to have elections. Many salafi groups call democracy and elections kufr (apostasy). Ikhwan have managed to infiltrate almost all government departments, schools, companies, etc.. with their supporters. Given 3 more years, there is no doubt that they would have tightened their grip on the army and the police which would make removing them from power virtually impossible. As for Egyptian public opinion, it is enough to watch any Egyptian TV channel to see millions of Egyptians (some estimates are as high as 36 million) in the streets protesting against the brotherhood. For the first time in Egyptian history, bearded men and women wearing islamic dress have been assaulted by ordinary Egyptians as they were thought to be MB supporters. The level of hatered of ordinary Egyptians towards islamists is unprecedented. The slogan "islam is the solution" was exposed as hollow and meaningless.
