Humanitarian paradigm?Reader comment on item: Achieving Israel Victory with Martin Sherman Submitted by Malcolm (Israel), May 15, 2017 at 09:26 While the answers of Daniel Pipes to Martin Sherman make general sense, "giving a try" to Sherman's oddly named "Humanitarian Paradigm" is not advisable. Recall that during the post-Tito turmoil in Yugoslavia, Western governments took no significant action against Serbia for a long time. Until, that is, Serbia undertook a mass expulsion of the Muslim population of Kosovo, whereupon NATO bombed Serbia into submission. Likewise, Western criticism of Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank has so far been accompanied by a minimum of concrete measures, but that would change if Israel initiated a massive evacuation of Palestinians. Serbia thus defined the limits of international patience. "Let Israel win" is in principle correct, but only within the limits defined by Mr. Pipes himself; to transgress those limits could be fatal. As for $1 billion to "make the Zionist case," the problem is not that official Israel does not have such money, but that it has shown no ability to make that case - with however much money. (First find a "new Abba Eban"!) The government did announce some time ago an extra 100 million shekels fur this purpose, but so far we have seen little more than some public waffling about how to spend it. All the good work to make that case is being done by private initiatives, such as CAMERA, Canary Mission, Creative Coalition for Peace, CUFI, European Coalition for Israel, MEMRI, NGO Monitor, Palestinian Media Watch, Shurat HaDin (to mention just a few in alphabetical order). For sure, some of them could well use a little more money. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Reasoned disagreement is welcome but not comments that are scurrilous, off-topic, commercial, disparaging religions, or otherwise inappropriate. For complete regulations, see the "Guidelines for Reader Comments". Daniel Pipes replies: No one is talking about a mass expulsion. The topic is voluntary repatriation.
