It is very clear that the tradition provided by our dear Syed and attributed to 3Umar ibn al-Kkatab is anachronistic but I will make it simple for you;
al-Shafi3ee in the 3rd century of islam stated that, and this is the golden rule now in Islamic theology, that sunat al-rasul (oh silly me you do not know any Arabic and notice that sunan is the plural) or the tradition of the prophet (Muhammad) are the standard for al-sunna or the traditions which means that if Muhammad did it some way this some way is the real sunna. So the likes of 3Umar can say anything he wants to see and in this case an anachronistic tradition but what matters is that Muhammad indeed kissed the ka3bba!
This means that this kissing business of a stone is nothing but paganism and it cannot be taken away or brushed aside.
...Having said this, praying to an unseen God is not any different from praying to a statue!
