Where you make your mistake Dr. Pipes is in assuming that a change of tactics implies a change of goals. I am no more comfortable with a pseudo "democratization" of islam. "aspiring to a consistent and global application of Islamic law under the rule of a caliph" remains the goal of mainstream mulsims as well. Surrendering the goal of bringing the entire planet under the heel of islam is a core tenet of islam and cannot be ignored by ANY muslim, violent or not.
