Not Realistic to suggest Muslims leave Islam?Reader comment on item: How Islamic Are Muslims? Submitted by Ron Thompson (United States), Jul 31, 2014 at 16:33 With all due respect to Daniel Pipes, the reasons for advocating freedom for Muslins from the tyranny of Islam is not that all or even most should leave the religion, but that 1) Such advocacy is the vital missing voice in the debate about the role of Islam in the world. The present situation where the loudest Muslims can say any LIE about Israel, the United States, or Western values, while the rigid taboo remains in place that no Western leader will say any TRUTH about the core doctrines of islam, places us in extreme ideological vulnerability. We must not only necessarily look weak to the loudest Muslims, but existentially uncertain of our own values, Therefore to oppose and confront Islam directly may well be a boon to the psychology and mental well-being of the West, without regard to its immediate effect on the totality of the Muslim population. and 2) Such advocacy is support for any minorities of Muslims who may silently or secretly deplore the core values of the religion they were born into - hatred, intolerance, denial of equal humanity to women - and want to it. Our taboo on criticizing Islam itself must mean that we can't tell what secret dissent there may be among Muslims. Our silence tells them, stay silent, we will not come to your defense if you speak up. We will not grant you political refugee status if you decide you want to leave islam for another religion or to become a free thinker. These are two of the reasons, regardless of any short-term impact on the majority of the world's Muslims, why I suggest this totalitarian belief system should be explicitly opposed.
