But Q2:256 was abrogated by the "Fighting verse"Reader comment on item: How Islamic Are Muslims? Submitted by dhimmi no more (United States), Aug 4, 2014 at 12:25 Dr. Pipes The more I read the article by Askari and Rehman the more I realize that it is no more than poor Islamic/ Ahmadi da'wa On page 5 and 6 the authors tell us that Q2:256 or the "There is no compulsion in religion" verse is clear evidence that their real Islam promotes religious tolerance not unlike New Zealand However if we read the revered Islamic tafseer a very different emerges 1. al-Tabari tells us that Q2:256 is هذا منسوخ or this is abrogated (by Q9:29 and 9:5 and 2:216) 2. Ibn Kathir tells us هي منسوخة باية القتال or it (Q2:256) is abrogated by the fighting verse (Q9:29) 3. And this is what al-Qurtubi says انها منسوخة or it (Q2:256) is abrogated I can go on and on and here is a long list of those Ulama that believe that this verse is abrogated So how did the Ulama explain this verse? Well if you read al-Tabari he provides a little story about Jews (and may be Christians in some other forms of the story) that adopted Arab children or may be orphans and the reason is only Allahu a3lam and after the rise of Islam Muslims asked Muhammad what should be done and should these children be forced to become Muslims and he as usual consulted with Allah via Gabriel who in turn must have consulted with Allah and this verse was revealed so this is not a blanket tolerance for other religions after all how can Allah tolerate false religions or even worse paganism And if Askari and Rehman were correct then how come millions of their Hindu ancestors were murdered (as per Q9:5 or ayat al-sayf) and raped and enslaved by the Muslim invaders of India with such verse of religious tolerance in the Qur'an? Well here is the real problem that Askari and Rehman face: 1. Discard all the Quranic tafsir by the likes of al-Tabari and al-Qurtubi and Ibn Kathir and declare them as not teaching what real Islam is all about and for this I would say to them good luck 2. Declare that Q9:5 and Q9:29 and Q2:216 as verses that were revealed at a point in time when Muhammad was fighting the pagans and the Jews and Christians and that Q2:256 abrogates those verses. The problem here is it would mean that the Qur'an is a book that was written at a point in time and that it is not good for all places and all times Again Askari and Rehman either knew of all of the above and were hoping that we kuffar do not know or they really did not know or even worse they must be reading different tafsir that we do not have or even know about They should be ashamed of themselves

But the point remains: this study of "Islamicity" finds that Muslim-majority countries are failing to live up the Islam's standards and Western ones are better achieving them, something full of implications.
