Reader comment on item: I Taught NATO to Stand Up to a Dictator

Dear Mr Pipes;

First of all i have to say that i emphasis your stand for your thoughts. Even though I do not agree with it. But also believe that you crossed a line, and even tried to insult a country with your action.

I personally did not ever supported or voted for Erdogan. As a person lived in Istanbul, even for municipality elections i always voted against him many years ago even before he came in power. I truly hope that he will loose this power one day. So don't take my words as it is a support for him.

But you should also have to understand that; Gulen movement is not just only a political movement. It has all elements in it, and until recent incidents happened in last 2 years, they were part of Erdogan's movement. So in my case i see both as one devil in different shoes, but one has extra blood in his hands. Their problem within each other started in 2 big issues. Money and control of education. And carried out till the coup attempt. As the Guler described them selves before; "movement is representing minority but that minority has a density" and this minority tried to take power with army support. Which ended up with civilian casualties.

Also i should say i do not support you for trying to force him to address to Turkish Government in any platform. If you really believe in importance of this speech you should have cancelled the meeting to have your point, rather then enforcing a government to be addressed in a formal meeting against a terror group. At the end; 2 actors of this theater is a selected government and other one is an organization who tried coup with army and responsible of civilian casualties.

Since current government is a selected one and supposed to act as representative of the people, I support their action of leaving the meeting since it is not Erdogan they are representing but my country. And like any other i do not support any meeting with any illegal organization without approval of majority in the country.

Daniel Pipes replies:

If I was not clear enough in the article above, let me be very explicit here:

The Middle East Forum sought to present the major protagonists in Turkey. We do not endorse the Gülen movement. But when the Erdoğan government tried to shut it out, we fought for our right to present it in the person Emre Çelik.
