Hungarians Value Freedom - Hooray!Reader comment on item: Hungary: Not "Submitting to Islam" Submitted by Dave (United States), Aug 14, 2018 at 22:19 Experience under Soviet oppression has led Hungarians, and other former bloc states, to prize freedom and recognize tyranny. That puts Hungary in line with the US, as many Americans came here to escape political and clerical oppression. That also explains the affinity with Israel, which is an outpost of relative liberty in a violent and intolerant region, and the horror at Islamism, which resembles Communist ideology in many ways. Plus, so many of those Third World countries are failed states and dictatorships, so why import them? Of course, freedom is a relative thing and it looks very different depending on the context, but it's heartening to know that the human spirit can still assert itself in many unexpected places. I never would have figured that Hungary would be a role model in that respect.
