You missed the point

The point of Dr. Pipes' article is to prove that he didn't print a "falsehood" about Barack Obama's Muslim past, as short as it was or as irrelevant you may think that it is to this presidential campaign. The author is extremely careful not to be accused of libel, and does extensive research before publishing his works.

Therefore, the accusations against him about the "falsehood" are false in themselves. The silence of Barack Obama on this speaks volumes; it would behoove him to make a public statement confirming or denying his former Muslim faith, then we can move on to other things.
