Until now, Islamist rule has implied violence and dictatorship; can it evolve into something decent?

NO.

Turkey is not a traditional Islamic nation. Historically, it has been closely associated with Europe and was once known as "The Sick Man Of Europe." The Turkish State does not represent a credible model by which to analyze "Islamist rule," past, present & future.

What most researchers & analysts fail to comprehend is that the Qur'an is Holy Writ for the Islamic world. Its most fervent adherents live contemporary life with a 7th Century mentality. Then once you understand this, you will make sense of the reason(s) why so-called main stream Islam is not compatible with Western culture, values, or political ideology.
