p.s. - Monis's actions cannot be attributed directly and totally to mental illness (unless of course if you treat islam as a disease) . He deliberately chose the Lindt Cafe in Martin Place in the very centre of Sydney - because it was literally 50m across the mall from Channel 7's offices and studios. Channel 7 is one of the big 4 TV chains in Australia. There would be no other location in Australia where you could pull off a hostage drama and have it affect so many people and be guaranteed instant TV coverage. And instantly get the police involved - and disrupt the economy of the city .

Monis had his legal appeal dismissed by the High Court on the previous Friday. He was convicted for writing disgusting anti-western pro-islami diatribes to the widows of the Australian soldiers killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan, He also managed to live off Centrelink benefits for at least 10 years.

He was facing 40 (yes four zero) charges for sexual assault which had not yet gone to court and he was out on bail. So, over the weekend - he realised he had nothing left to lose. And an excuse to put on his bandana which has written on it ".We are your soldiers , O prophet Mohammed'

An interesting point was highlighted which Daniel Pipes touched on :

"Sydney, though, is just the latest in a series of attacks by mentally unstable criminals who claim to be fighting in the cause of Islamic extremism. In May four people were killed by a gunman at a Jewish museum in Brussels. In September in Moore, Oklahoma, a woman was beheaded by a coworker. October twentieth, a Canadian soldier was killed in a hit-and- run attack in Quebec, and two days later, the Canadian parliament building was attacked and another soldier died."

In Monis' case - his actions were deliberate , calculated and contrived and had he lived (instead of dying in a hail of 90 police bullets (who attacked immediately after he fired a shotgun at a male hostage's head from a meter away ) - a court would no doubt have found him criminally culpable of hostage taking and murder . The second hostage , a mother of 3 young children was shot but died in the ambulance on the way to hospital from a heart attack.

I wonder if he would have tried the tactic of using islam as the cause of his mental impairment and therefore entered a plea of diminished responsibility.

From the State's side - he could have spent the rest of his life in jail - which would have cost the taxpayer tens of millions of dollars - so as harsh as it is to applaud the death of another human being - the facts are that death is going on all the time - and those who have zero respect for other's lives should have no expectation of waking up the next day.
