OK, 50 years overly generous

It would not take much for an apocalypse to happen. 7+billion people , nuclear arsenals, climate change, environmental degradation, radiation residues at various points around the planet , species extinction, blah, blah, blah. And on top of that 1.5 billion muslims - with 10% of them fanatics and being quite willing and motivated by enough hate to bring total destruction on the West (and therefore the rest of the world) in order to bring about their 'caliphate'. So far, they do not have the means - and it is hard to see how they ever could. Russia despises them, we despise them , as do the Chinese and Indians.

I'd move inland away from population centres.

I never said that . I had no idea you live near mountains. But that does sound like a good idea.

So you are more able to grow your own food and keep it. Why would you need to drive around in time of a disaster if you had been properly prepared? But if you had to - there is always the Honda Prius!

You mean cyclone Sandy? That was a storm surge - not a tidal wave. Still devastating though.

Yep the $100 quad processor android phone - what a marvel. The most amazing tool ever for the price. Still - it's just a tool - and entertainment. I can't eat it though and as far as its communications functions go - it is dependent on a huge amount of EMP-susceptible infrastructure. But it's not just Westerners with cell phones. Big in Russia and China and India too don't forget.
