cultural differencesReader comment on item: Siege in Sydney Submitted by Mohammed Waza Khiddif Id'ullah (Australia), Jan 23, 2015 at 23:08 "I honestly don't know about this, Waz, having never lived around Muslims. " Many of us do have the ability to have that wonderful experience. Not so much in the US I guess because you have such a relatively small population of muslims and a large actual population. But from what I hear - if you're really keen - you could move to certain areas such as Dearborn, Michigan - to do your own evaluation. "I've lived around American Blacks, Mexicans and poor Whites, generally in combination. " Well that's something I haven't had the privilege of doing - except the (relatively) Poor Whites maybe. Another example of the differences in our cultural experiences. . I thought the situation "from Norway to Australia" was along those lines; so I may have been wrong.Any of us could leave tomorrow - so who cares what happens - when our main responsibility is to be happy within ourselves simply because we are in touch with ourselves?" That sort of thing a bloke does with himself in private -- is that called "being in touch"? Being in touch with oneself to me means you are fully in contact with your intellect, emotions , soul and not suffering from extraneous thoughts taking you out of the moment, I'm not sure how you define it. Obviously there are going to be cultural and languae differences between all the countries that have growing muslim populations - but the effect on all these different cultures and the perception and exasperation of an increasing number of their populaces is the same. "Yeah, it does make one sort of happy, able to get away from it all. In the US, once someone gets enough money, especially if he's married, he packs up his family and moves to the suburbs. We've gone one further -- we're practically in the boondocks." Good for you. 1. "longer than we think..." I suppose you're talking about end-times prophecies. The way I have it figured, I might get to see Zechariah 14 happen while I'm still alive. Oh joy, joy! (sarcasm) Nuclear war -- just the thing to ward off boredom. My other option is to die before that happens. At age 66, that might not be so far away. I meant in a personal sense. We might not be dying as soon as we expect - so don't make the assumption that you won't be here when you actually will be here - or vice versa for that matter. There's no doubt a significant crunch time is coming but it's impossible to predict its nature. There's many ways to interpret things but you deal with them at the time. Eg. the 'sky is falling' and 'the sea is rising ' etc are great ways to panic people now - but in 50 years time - humans will find ways of dealing with the practical effects. Of course some things would be next to impossible to deal with on a large scale - nuclear winter & significant long-lived radiation levels. So maybe the boondocks is not a bad place to be in certain respects. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
