(After Ernest Bevin's actions)
Palestine - Volumes 1-5 - American Zionist Emergency Council, 1946, pp.1-2
Vol.2, No. 9, 10
November-December, 1945
Innumerable commissions have looked for havens for homeless Jews outside of Palestine and have found none.
Innumerable experts have investigated the absorptive capacity of Palestine and all the unprejudiced ones among them have issued favorable reports.
The Jews of Europe shout at the top of their voices that they want to go to Palestine and nowhere else. The readiness of Palestine Jewry to receive and absorb their European kin is no less emphatic. If, remembering all these facts, one still entertained any doubts as to the true intent of the Joint Committee, its terms of reference would eliminate the doubts.
The terms of reference are eminently anti-Zionist in spirit and in letter. And a priori preclude the adoption of pro-Zionist recommendations by the Committee. Even if, by some miracle, both the British and American appointees to the Committee should be altogether objective and sincerely friendly to Jewry, they would be unable to escape from the anti-Zionist grip of the terms of reference.
It is not a Committee of Inquiry but a Committee of Liquidation that Mr. Bevin offers.
Under different circumstances , we would have been the first to welcome America's official cooperation with Great Britain in Palestine. As it is, we can only deplore the fact that our Government has lent its name and its hand to an instrument of betrayal of Jewish rights and hopes. Such a policy has never been endorsed by the American people.
It never will be.
THE ARAB HIGHER COMMITTEE
The two rival families of Arab effendis in Palestine, the Husseinis and Nashashibis, have buried the hatchet and made peace, and a Higher Committee of Palestine Arabs has once again appeared on the scene. All that is needed now to complete the picture is to have Amin el Husseini, the ex-Mufti of Jerusalem, head the committee as in bygone days. Then, the illusion that nothing has changed and nothing has happened since 1939 will be quite complete.
Indeed, one wonders, was there really a World War II? Did the Arabs ally themselves with the Nazi-Fascist Axis?
Did Amin el Husseini run for his life from Palestine to Syria, then to Iraq, then to Rome and Berlin? Were Auni Bey Abdul Hadi , Jemal el Husseini and other Arab leaders exiled by the British from Palestine to the seychelles?
Did all this actually happen, or was it only a dream?
Did all this actually happen, or was it only a dream?
Seeing that all those pogromists, rebels and Axis agents are now allowed to sit on the Arab Higher Committee, that one of them, Mr. Shukeiri, who fled from Palestine with the Mufti, represents the Arab League in Washington, that all of them are treated with the greatest respect and reverence by the leaders of the democratic world, one must feel that the last six years were a dream, a very bad dream which has not yet ended.
The Husseinis, the family of the Jerusalem ex-Mufti, have overpowered the Nashashibis and the more moderate elements among the Arab notables.
In the process of forcing the moderates to their knees, a few of the latter were killed by the Mufti's bandits, others were intimidated, and thus "unity" among the Arabs of Palestine was achieved and widely proclaimed. The ruling families have made a deal between them, and the masses of the people will be ordered to abide by that deal or intimidated into doing so.
The foundation for the whole affair has been provided by agents of the British Colonial Office who assured Hitler's agents of impunity; who allowed the exiled leaders to return to Palestine; who let Rashid Ali Bey Gailani, the leader of the pro-Axis revolt in Iraq, find sanctum in Mecca and thus escape the death sentence passed on him in absentia; who now maneuver behind the scenes to bring about the exoneration of Amin el Husseini; and who encourage the Arab League in its crusade against Jewry and Zionism.
The bitter lessons of yesterday are completely forgotten.
