Turkey has not been a western ally for years

The mistaken impression that Turkey has a western bent is due to the pre-Erdogan cultures.Just like Iran prior to the Islamic revolution of 1979, and similar to Egypt during the time of Nasr and prior to the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood, Turkey has succumbed to the same mindset of Islamist rulers. In this case, a stealthy Islamist, Erdogan created a boiled frog effect where the gradual change from secular to Muslim was imperceptible. Now, suddenly there are hijab laws, journalist imprisonments, hostility towards Israel, who had become a productive trade partner. In some ways we can look to Turkey as a model for the slow creep of Islamist rule, and observe Egypt as the outcome of the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood. It is clear that the MB effects will be felt heavily in many countries in the Middle East and are currently in play in Syria.
