March 22, 1979 - History of IsraelReader comment on item: Why Israelis Shy from Victory Submitted by Robert (United States), Oct 3, 2018 at 10:07 Dear Daniel Pipes, I find myself forced to confess a very serious error of FACT I've made in my posting on your web site regarding the Soverign State of Israel in relation to the UN Security Council, which forces me to revise my views on the bearing of International Law. Although I've had extensive discussions on the matter before, including with a UN diplomat, I was only made aware of my error by watching a Video on the issue of Israeli Settlements on YouTube yesterday here: "Israeli settlements, explained | Settlements Part I" On March 22, 1979, Israel's Knesset (Parliament) passed on the adoption of the Peace Treaty between Israel and Egypt (under the Carter Administration). However, on the very same day, at the UN Security Council, when Andrew Young, the "great" African American (formerly an associate of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.) was the US Ambassador to the UN, the following Resolution was passed and adopted, the USA having obtained in the voting (it's veto power had not been invoked: Resolution 446 (1979) In particular, the first numbered paragraph is as follows (italics omitted): "Determines that the policy and practice of Israel in establishing settlements in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967 have no legal validity and constitute a serious obstruction to achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East." Until yesterday, I wasn't aware of the particular fact. It forces me to revise my views - particularly as to the Political, rather than the Legal, nature of the UN during the Cold War. What Andrew Young had done back than was to create Israel as the new "PALE OF SETTLEMENT" for Jews. It was, in fact, on the ground, the Ethic Cleansing of Israeli Jews in all the territories outside of Israel in relation tot he 1949 Armistice Lines. Contrary to the provisions of the Palestine Mandate, Jews were no to be allowed to Settle in any part of Palestine except Israel as it existed before the 1967 Six Day War. This is the real meaning of US President Jimmy Carter's "APARTHEID" - Jews were to be kept apart from Arabs, by "international law": they were not to be allowed to live, for example, in East Jerusalem, or Judea and Samaria (the West Bank), because that part of Mandatory Palestine was to be kept "clean of Jews." Now I understand much better why Abbas chose to take the International multilateral route to Peace instead However, the very purpose of Zionism - the creation of a Soverign Homeland for Jews - was to protect the Jews against the ANTISEMITISM of the World. For the world at large, Israel is the new Ghetto within Mandatory Palestine, and Jews are prohibited by "international law" from Settling in the rest of Palestine. But of course, Arabs (20%) may live within this Jewish Ghetto which is Israel. You probably think of all this as "advocacy for Israel." But Israel is extremely strong Militarily. What it lack's most to achieve "Victory" is HASBARA (like herein by me). Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
