Yes, Weasel, the '94 treaty was not technically a treaty, but if Russia gets away with trashing Ukraine it will seriously undermine the credibility of the West. It will also tempt Russia and its allies, such as China and Iran, to further adventurism. Ukraine made a big concession by giving up its nukes and bombers, encouraged to do so by assurnces from Russia (ha!), the UK and the US. Those assurances now look pretty thin, and hiding behind a technicality is mean spirited and cowardly.
Furthermore, Russia can use an implied nuclear threat to go on to attack a NATO member, and we will still hear the Greek chorus intoning "Fear! Fear! Fear! A nuclear war!" to stay our hand, article 5 notwithstanding.
Russia must not be allowed to use nuclear extortion to intimidate the West because that will only lead to future aggression.
