Here are some commonly heard "truths" this invasion belies:
- Racism is the world's number 1 problem: But this a vicious war against people of the same race and religion.
- Western colonialism and US hubris are the cause of most conflicts: But this war was launched by an eastern imperialist power and was in no way caused by the West, except maybe to tempt Ukraine to go western and democratic.
- Russia's need for a buffer zone merits sympathy: But does that extend to sympathizing with the carnage we see? Like Hitler needed the Sudetenland.
- NATO is a threat to Russia: But despite so many NATO members' underfunding their military, Russia invaded anyway.
- The US military is overfunded: Between Ukraine's need for massive arms infusions and the aggressive alliance of Russia, China, Iran, N Korea et al., a robust deterrence is screamingly apparent.
- We should avoid provoking Putin and his ilk: By now, Biden's pre-invasion, tiptoeing mistakes are painfully obvious.
- We cannot be world's policeman: No, but think of the ramifications of a Russian victory: More conquests into more countries, even greater economic disruptions, carnage, and copy-cat behavior from Russia's malign allies, possibly leading to World War III. Deterrence is a stitch in time.
