"Lions' Den": The "New Wave" terrorists in Nablus

"Lion's Den" - this is the name that terrorist operatives in Nablus leading the current wave of terrorism call themselves. Dozens of videos documenting their activities are distributed on social networks: they are masked, wear black uniforms and tie red fabric ribbons to the barrels of their guns, as a sort of "promise" that they will not fire bullets in vain.
Most of them are young people in their twenties, who did not participate in the Al-Aqsa Intifada in 2000 and are not familiar with the IDF's response in 2002. The killing of three terrorist operatives in Nablus in February, followed by the killing of their fourth friend, Ibrahim al-Nablusi, who managed to escape that killing, returned the spirit. in the terror sails in the city, and helped more young people join the group, which has been growing stronger ever since.
Palestinian researchers have already published studies on the new "Fedayeen" - for example, Ibrahim Rabia's article in the recently published Journal of Palestinian Affairs. Local officials also spoke to us about these armed groups in Nablus, which are based in Al-Yasmina and Al-Caesariyah in the Old City. According to them, the people of the "Lions' Den" in the city - about a hundred in number today - act inspired by their counterparts based in the Jenin refugee camp. The "organization" unites under it terrorists from all Palestinian factions - Fatah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad - who seek to confront the IDF and ignite a new intifada on the ground. They have only been operating officially for a few months, but have already managed to become a trend among many young people who join them.

The masks of the "Lion's Den" began to appear at receptions for released terrorists at their weddings, as well as at funeral processions for terrorists killed by Israel and in mourning Sukkots. They also began to confront the Palestinian security mechanisms, who were losing the little control they had over the territory. At the same time, their active involvement in armed confrontations with IDF soldiers, MGB and undercover forces increased.
In particular, the "Lions' Den" people are the ones who set themselves the goal of harming the soldiers and civilians who enter the city for the purpose of visiting Joseph's Tomb, and even stated: "He who enters the tomb will leave in the grave." Palestinian officials stated that the frequent entries of the Israeli forces into the territory under the control of the Palestinian Authority provoked the need to "oppose" these entries. "The Israeli side was relatively committed to the decision not to enter the territories of the Palestinian Authority from 1995 to 2000," said Wissam Hanon, a released prisoner in the Jenin camp. "For more than twenty years the Israelis have been breaking the agreements, so young people who saw this failure decided to act and take matters into their own hands."
The governor of Nablus, Ibrahim Ramadan, wants to calm down the terrorists - and for that he has sat down with the armed groups in the past, and intends to sit down with them in the future. Ramadan offered the militants solutions "that would be acceptable to the other side as well", alluding to a "wanted persons agreement" according to which responsibility for their treatment would be given to the Palestinian Authority and not to Israel. "I sat several times with the Shabaab in the old city of Nablus for fear of Palestinian bloodshed. There were discussions, some of them agreed and some did not. Those who agreed to the solutions were immediately accused of treason," Ramadan said. The meetings, therefore, were of no use.

Ramadan emphasized that he would not accept the existence of any other armed force in the territories of the PA other than the security mechanisms. "There is only one weapon, and it is the PA's," he said. He described the "Lions' Den" people as "disobedient teenagers" who must be protected: "I fear for their lives, that they are not aware of their true value. They are our children and their blood must not be spilled. I want to protect them because the Palestinian blood....they must be saved Even if they are not convinced of it. The popular resistance should not be at the expense of Palestinian blood."

The gunmen in Nablus poured scorn on the governor after he dared to say in an interview to a local radio that mothers who send their children to die are "perverts": "Sending a child to die is not a motherly act. They are mistakenly called fighters." In response, the people of "Lyons den" issued a statement demanding that he "save a little of his honor and resign". In sharper reactions to his words, the governor of Nablus was called a "Zionist and collaborator". Ramadan then retracted his words.

The disdainful attitude towards the security mechanisms and the Palestinian Authority was also manifested in the way they obtained the release of Musab Eshti, a Hamas member who was arrested by the Palestinian security mechanisms. The group's rebellious image has attracted many young people, some of whom buy weapons to join it with their finger already on the trigger. Some terrorists who carried out recent attacks said that they sold cars and tractors in exchange for weapons.
As mentioned, the group advocates regional unity, and not loyalty to a faction. Its people are not subject to a political or political decision of this or that leader, but act independently. Organizational unity is also presented in the media, in joint press conferences where the flags of all Palestinian organizations are displayed. "We operate under the banner of 'There is no god but Allah,'" they stated more than once. But in a broader sense, their activity serves the position of Hamas: a call for national Palestinian unity against Israel.
The fluidity of organizational affiliation was expressed, for example, in terrorists who are identified with one organization while their family is identified with another organization. For example, Al-Nablusi, who as mentioned was recently eliminated, was affiliated with the Islamic Jihad, but called himself Abu-Fathi, after the leader of Fatah's Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.
