ah, excuse me...Reader comment on item: Study the Koran? Submitted by tom (Canada), Mar 7, 2008 at 18:16 "Now if we put aside these differences, Islam has something that no other prior scripture had, which is a whole system that societies and governments can build their laws around. For example laws of inheirtance, divorce, child-care, charity work, adultry, stealing, etc. Many scholars worldwide who are skeptical of Islam as a religion do atest that it is the best economical socio-political system...." ahem, did you perhaps overlook the talmud? that is a very comprehensive system of laws covering everything from cradle to grave, predating mohammed and the koran, and quite workable. in fact, it forms the basis for much of western law. as for the koran... i wouldn't exactly go all gaga over its rules of inheritance (they are detailed, but contradictory and decidely unfair to women), divorce (great if you're a man...), adultery (punishable by death?), theft (amputation), rape (the victim gets the lash, after a multiple gang-rape), homosexuality (impaling?), etc. and i am NOT referring to ancient practices, but to the way it is practiced TODAY throughout the moslem world. and as a political system, the very rift between sunni and shia moslems attests to the political instability of hereditary rule, while the almost complete dominance of totalitarian regimes speaks very poorly of the relationship between the government and the governed in moslem countries. the illiteracy and disease in countries with enormous oil wealth is glaringly obvious, for example. "comprehensive" seems to include big doses of inequality and injustice, with a little homophobia throw in for good measure!
