Andrew Rippin passed away on November 29/2 016 in Victoria BC Canada

He studied the history of Islam the Qur'an and Islam as a religion and his work on Quranic Tafsir is truly remarkable

I regard his introduction to Wansbrough 's very difficult book Quranic Studies as his finest work

And yes indeed he was very much a skeptic about the origins of early Islam as transmitted by the Islamic Historical Tradition but he had great understanding of the very vast and contradictory Islamic literary sources
