Some scholars say that it was "like an egg" and majority of them say it was spread, but if you look at the context of it, it doesn't really matter.

And this is what, in the archaic Arabic that was spoken in those times, بعد was to be used. Let me present to you another example:

This was a sentence in a Shakespeare play and you can clearly see that "an" is placed before a consonant, but it isn't wrong, for in that time, CERTAIN sentences differed in the usage of "an" and "a". Same thing with the Arabic spoken by Bedouins.
