Let me say, first, that if Sharon had not been knocked out of the ring by a perhaps ill-advised prescription to take heparin, the evacuation from the Gaza would now not be perceived by anyone, least of all Hamas and Hizbollah, as a sign of weakness. But that's water under the bridge.
I agree with your prescriptions. Israel, simply by pursing its own valid national interest, could bring about a sea-change in attitude thorughout the entire region which would accrue to the benefit of of the United States subject only to two huge "IFS": a). Does Olmert have the courage to order, within the next couple of days, the IDF to enter Southern Lebanon in force and do what it takes to literally destroy Hizbollah?; and b). Will our own American Administration resist the temptation to enter into a fatuous and totally pre-mature cease fire? I hope Olmert, Bush, and Rice are listening. When this thing is over, one way or another, it will not be able to be said that there were no public voices with the right prescription.
