Circular Problem?Reader comment on item: Friendless in the Middle East Submitted by Charlie Griffith (United States), Nov 8, 2011 at 13:46 ...."Democracy pleases us but brings hostile elements to power."...is part of Dr Pipes' opening sentence and he expands on this a bit......then at the very last of his good article, he says:... "....Help the liberal, secular, and modern elements, those who in the first place stirred up the upheavals of 2011. Assist them eventually to come to power, so that they can salvage the politically sick Middle East from its predicament and move it in a democratic and free direction." Doesn't that create a dilemma which will constantly bring us around again full circle(s) to where we've been in Central Asia/Asia Minor for these past ten years? We could remain there for generations' as the British tried, and look at the present day complicated mess. Democracy is simply not in the genetic makeup of these Asian tribal peoples who've been butchering each other so viciously for thousands of years. Why, oh why, should we Americans now think that we can "win hearts and minds" in this cauldron and nourish "democracy"? All these tribal peoples still within their artificially contrived Colonial borders ...really want....is bales upon bales of American cash, continuing as an entitlement while they hold us hostage to the mere possibility of their implimenting our concept of "Democracy". This is not defending the continental limits of the United States. This is setting us up as "useful idiots". Right now, we're just spinning our wheels. Let's get out. The sooner the better. Stop this cycle. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please.
