Rushdie loathed the UKReader comment on item: Salman Rushdie and British Backbone Submitted by Jackie Goymour (United Kingdom), Jun 26, 2007 at 09:13 Salman Rushdie decried England and everything it stood for. He never failed to criticise this country, its poeple, its government, its values and its way of life. I detested him for that. And it is for THAT reason, and that reason only, that Rushdie should never have been given a knighthood. And his safety was guaranteed by the British security forces 24/7 at the British taxpayer's expense, which over a few years cost a fortune. Hie owes us gratitude (and indeed his very life), and all we got was bile. Good riddance he left these shores. I have read "The Moor's Last Sigh" which is about the fall of the Moors in Spain, and the tale runs concurrently with a story of a wealthy Indian family whose fortunes are resurrected by a Jew, who does not come out smelling of roses. It was by the way, a very well written book. Re the Satanic Verses, I think he wanted to court publicity, but what he got was not what he wanted.
