YHWH only is GodReader comment on item: Salman Rushdie and British Backbone Submitted by Oliver (United States), Jul 10, 2007 at 13:45 Ex 3:14 God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.' " Ex 3:15 God also said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.' TNIV You may wish to argue that ‘Jehovah' is the name of the Almighty – but I do not agree. ‘Jehovah' is an attempt at expressing in English letters the tetragrammaton (LORD) of the Hebrew text (Y or J) H (W or V) H. Seeing as Hebrew has no vowels and there is no consensus as to which English letters should best represent the Hebrew consonants, two variations (in English) have been proposed – JeHoVaH and YaHWeH. I prefer ‘Yahweh'. But neither is absolutely correct. As I understand it, the Jews – in an attempt to keep the commandment not to speak the LORD's name in vain – will not speak or pronounce the tetragrammaton, they will speak the word for LORD (Adonai) in its place – it is the Greek word for LORD (Kyrios or Kurios) that is found in the Greek OT (Septuagint) and NT. So, the accepted form of God's name IS in the Christian NT.
