Hindu Civilisation is AllyReader comment on item: Still Asleep After Mumbai Submitted by Singha (India), Dec 23, 2008 at 11:47 Pete, In essence this is a totalitarian world view not very different from what our islamic friends advocate. You are replacing koran by the symbol of Jesus. The theory, one prophet, has captured all the truth in the universe in one book for all times to come, is a false one. God and Nature celebrate diversity. While you might decry the Hindu Icons, I would like to share with you a segment of Swamy and Friends, a story of RK Narayan. In this story, the Christian Teacher Ebenezer in his moral class crticizes, Hindu God Krishna as a lusty womaniser and as someone that steals butter and then his eyes swell with tears when he remembers Jesus the apostle who was born to save all the humanity. Little Swamy, brahmin student in the class stands up and asks if Jesus was so good why is his father's name not known (In Indian subcontinent this is a slur), why did he drink wine and meat (killing for eating is something many orthodox Hindu Brahmins still find detestible) and who Jesus's own Jewish people thought it fit to hand him over to the Romans...and the like. Ebenezer has no clear answer and ends up caning Swamy. My point is simple. What is a better faith is subjective. Just as two people are different, each's spiritual means/needs too are subjective. One size fits all is false. Hindu elite have a deep disdain for totalitarian ideologies including religious ones. The separation and religion and state is paramount. Church in India and United States should not end up alienating Hindu civilization, a civilisation that has commonalities with free values of West, and one that has a critical role in cutting down the pernicious ideology of totalitarian islam. To influence India, Peddling church and its agents especially deceitful ones will be the wrong way to go.
