Dear Dr Pipes, following the discussion on Q 79-30 in this forum, I also decided to study Q 79-30. Since the common allegation is that people quote Quran out of context, I read the verses Q79-23 all the way till Q80-23.
It is true that in these verses, Allah seems to be telling us how he created the earth and its mountain. But, Allah here is misinforming us. He is telling us that the earth was flat, while he, obviously, had created an earth that was round like a globe. Glad that dear Christopher did not read or follow the Quran!
But I forgive Allah for scientific inaccuracies. All scripture contain inaccurate statements. But I should not forgive the Muslims for stubbornly claiming that the Quran was indelibly correct for all time to come.
I also noticed something very interesting around Q79-23. In this region of the Quran, Allah is markably calm. For almost 20 or so verses, he did not curse non-believers at all. The first bad word for non-Muslims did not occur till 80-17. Around, 80-17 Allah starts abusing non-believers again calling them "made out of a sperm" and condemning them in other ways. Nearly 20 verses without cursing non-believers is indeed very kind.
